Family:Whitney, Isaac (1748-1837)
Isaac5 Whitney (Isaac4, Nathaniel3, Benjamin2, John1), son of Isaac4 and Sarah (Crosby) Whitney, was born 28 Dec 1748, York, ME,[1] and died 21 Oct 1837, Gorham, ME.[2]
Marriage intentions were published 7 Apr 1772, Gorham, ME, for him and Mary Crockett,[3] daughter of Samuel Haley and Priscilla (Swett) (Jackman) Crockett. She was born circa 1752, Falmouth, ME, and died 29 Jul 1832, Gorham, ME. (Note: Samuel Haley Crockett m. as his third wife Mary (Cane) Whitney, the widow of Abel Whitney).
Pierce says the following:[4]
- Isaac was born at York, but soon moved to Gorham, where he married his wife. In 1775 he purchased a farm in Gorham of his wife's father, on which they settled and on which he died. She was the daughter of Samuel CROCKETT, of Gorham. His farm was, in 1874, in the possession of his grandson. He was in the Revolutionary war in the Massachusetts line, and Apr. 18, 1818, was granted a pension. In 1833 he was living in Cumberland Co., ME.

On this 30th day of April 1818, before me the subscriber, one of the Judges of the United States personally appeared Isaac Whitney aged sixty-nine years, resident in the town of Gorham in the district of Maine, who being by me first duly sworn according to law, doth, on his oath, make the following declaration in order to obtain the pension made by the late act of Congress, entitled "An act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval service of the United States in the Revolutionary War." That he the said Isaac Whitney enlisted in Gorham in the state of Massachusetts, and entered into the company commanded by Captain Josiah Jenkins at the White Plains in the State of New York about the 20th of May 1778, that he continued in said corps, in the service of the United States for the term of nine months, that being the time for which he enlisted, it being until about the 14th of March 1779 when he was discharged from service at West Point in the State of New York. That the said corps to which he was attached was not engaged in any battle during said term of nine months. That he is in reduced circumstance and stands in need of the assistance of his country for support, and that he has no other evidence now in his power of his said services, and that I am not borne on any pension list.

I, Isaac Whitney within named on oath declare in addition to the within statement by me made, that in the service within mentioned I belonged as a private to the company commanded by Capt. Josiah Jenkins, in the regiment commanded by Col. Samuel Brewer, in General Patterson's Brigade, in the Massachusetts line, on the continental establishment in the revolutionary war, in which company I performed full nine months service as within stated, and was honorably discharged.

I hereby testify that Isaac Whitney of Gorham, county of Cumberland, state of Massachusetts, entered the service of the United States for the term of nine months in May 1778 in the company I then commanded in Col. Samuel Brewer's Regiment, General Patterson's Brigade and served the full term and was discharged at West Point, State of New York.

I, Josiah Jenkins of Gorham in the State of Massachusetts do depose and say that I was a Captain in the Company of foot in the revolutionary war, in the regiment commanded by Col. Samuel Brewer of the Massachusetts line on the continental establishment, and that Isaac Whitney of said Gorham joined my company as a private and one of the nine month men immediately after our arrival at White Plain in the State of New York, after the Battle of Monmouth. Said Whitney continued to do duty in my said company until the March following when he was discharged at West Point in the State of New York, when the nine months were (----Illegible---). Said Whitney was a good soldier, never having received the displeasure or disapprobation of his officers.

Isacc Whitney, 2nd, age 71 years and a resident of Gorham, provided the U.S. Court, District of Maine with testimony concerning his financial and family circumstances. He owns three cows, one heifer, one old horse, one swine, six sheep, and a few necessary articles of household stuff. He has a bond for one half of the net income of seventy acres of land in Gorham, after labor, taxes, and expenses are paid. He does not think that his part has ever been or will be more than sixty dollars. He is earning about twenty dollars, and has no other estate income.

Gorham, 31 July 1832
Testimony before the Maine District Court in a petition to re-instate his pension:
Isaac Whitney, a resident of Gorham, Cumberland Co., Maine, aged 83 years, states that he was placed on the roll of the District of Maine agency and a certificate of pension was granted to him (which he now has in his possession) on his application made on 13 April 1818 (sic). His name was stricken from the pension roll on account of his property. (Here he recapitulates his service record, and states that after his service, he returned to Gorham, and resided there ever since.)
