James8 Whitney (Benjamin7, Aaron6, Daniel5, Daniel4, Henry3, John2, Henry1), son of Benjamin7 and Mary (Stark) Whitney, was born 19 Jan 1823, Big Flats, NY, and died 21 Jan 1899, Big Flats, NY. He is buried in Whitney Cemetery, Big Flats, NY.[1]

He married firstly, 14 Feb 1844, Dix, NY, Jerusha W. Grover, daughter of Mason and Sarah (Wiley) Grover. She was born 16 Feb 1823, New Brunswick, and died after 1892.

He married secondly, 25 Jun 1896, Horseheads, NY, Sarah McDonald, daughter of John and Euphemia (Hicks) McDonald. She was born 22 Jul 1844, Caledon, ON, and died 12 Jan 1912, Big Flats, NY. She is buried in Pioneer Cemetery, Big Flats, NY.[2]

Phoenix says the following:

". . . a dairy-farmer and stock-breeder . . . . They settled, 1 Apr 1844, at Big Flats, and were still living there, on the same farm, in Jul 1874. He enlisted, 15 Dec 1861, in the 5th Regiment, New York State Volunteer Heavy Artillery; served for eleven months as private, and for one month as second-lieutenant; was then appointed first-lieutenant, and acted as such till mustered out, 26 Feb 1865. He was again mustered into service, 27 Feb 1865, as first-lieutenant in the same regiment, and served till 5 June 1865, when he resigned."

i. Mary9 Whitney, b. 18 Mar 1846; m. 9 Apr 1862, Big Flats, NY, Robert Gardner, son of Elisha and Elsie (Smith) Gardner. They lived at Big Flats till their first two children were born, after which they moved to Horseheads, NY, where they were still living in 1874.
ii. Oscar Benjamin Whitney, b. 12 May 1850; m. Elizabeth Knapp.
iii. Robina Whitney, b. 2 Sep 1852; was living at Big Flats, NY, in 1874, with her parents.
