Family:Whitney, John (1805-1881)
John7 Whitney (Simon6, Timothy5, Jonas4, Moses3, Richard2, John1), son of Simon6 and Lucy (Hammond) Whitney, was born 11 Dec 1805, Petersham, MA,[1] and died 25 Apr 1881, Grafton, MA, aged 75 years 4 months 13 days, of diabetes.[2]
He married, 1 Jan 1838, Grafton, MA, Harriet Fay Bruce,[3] daughter of Joseph and Harriet (Fay) Bruce. She was born 3 Aug 1819, Grafton, MA, and died 6 Mar 1907, Grafton, MA, aged 87 years 7 months, of general debility and old age.[4]
John Whitney, Esq., generally known as "Honest John Whitney", died Monday after a long and painful illness. Mr. Whitney was a native of Petersham, in this county, where he was born 11 Dec 1805, and was consequently in his 76th year. He had, however, been a resident of this town for many years, having been prominently identified with the leather business from 1836 to 1870. His business career was marked by the strictest integrity, his course in all his dealings with others having always been dictated by a nice sense of honor and a sincerity of purpose. An obligation made by him was considered sacred, and its conditions, whether the obligation was pecuniary or otherwise, were always sure to be fulfilled; his honesty, faithfullness, and unswerving integrity winning for him the name of "Honest John Whitney." He was a member of the legislature in 1849, and had repeatedly filled local positions of honor and responsibility. He married a daughter of the Hon. Joseph Bruce, of Grafton, and his wife and one daughter survive him. He died Apr. 25, 1881; resided Grafton, MA.
