John P. Whitney (Jacob, (prob.) Jabez6, Jacob5, Jonas4, Eleazar3, Thomas2, John1), son of Jacob and Sally (Pratt) Whitney, was born about 1832, Grafton, MA, and died 28 Sep 1867, Athol, MA, aged 36 years, of typhoid fever.[1]

He "of Phillipston" married, 12 Oct 1859, New Salem, MA, Emma A. Foskett, of Orange, daughter of James and Hannah (-----) Foskett. She was born about 1841, Orange, MA,[2], and died after 1880. She married secondly, 8 Jan 1874, Athol, MA, Sumner W. Pitts, born about 1831, Orange, MA, son of Elisha J. and Mary (-----) Pitts, as his third wife.[3]

He was a "pedlar" [peddler].

i. Alice Emma Whitney, b. 30 Jun 1860, Petersham, MA;[4] m. 9 Jun 1878, Fitzwilliam, NH, William O. Greenough.[5]
ii. Alma F. Whitney, b. 20 Jan 1862, Athol, MA;[6] d. after 1900, then unmarried.
iii. James Jacob Whitney, b. 24 Mar 1864, Athol, MA;[7] d. 18 Jun 1867, Athol, MA, aged 3 years 3 months, of scarlet fever.[8]
iv. John Damon Whitney, b. 24 Sep 1867, Athol, MA;[9] d. 5 Oct 1870, Athol, MA, aged 1 year 8 days, of scarlet fever.[10]
