John Swain⁸ Whitney (Samuel⁷, Samuel⁶, Samuel⁵, Abraham⁴, Joseph³, John², Henry¹), son of Samuel⁷ and Lydia (King) Whitney, was born 21 Jan 1837, North East Harbor, NS, and died after 1880.

He married, 5 Jul 1865, Peekskill, NY, Pauline Garrison, daughter of Beverly and Sophia (Swim) Garrison. She was born 13 Oct 1839, Peekskill, NY, and died after 1892.

He was a machinist and engineer. He left his home in Nova Scotia, in 1855; dwelt at Cold Spring, NY, till 1863; and then moved to Peekskill, where they were living in Sep 1874. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy, at Brooklyn, NY, 18 Aug 1864; served on the Santiago de Cuba, taking part in the capture of Fort Fisher; and was discharged 16 Jun 1865.
