Joseph5 Whitney ([prob.] Joshua4, Cornelius3, Joshua2, John1), probably son of Joshua4 and [?Joanna?] (-----) Whitney, was born 24 Oct 1753, Killingly, CT, and died 24 Jan 1837, Ontario, NY. He was buried in the Gould Cemetery, Walworth, NY.[1]
He married, 16 Dec 1784, Putnam, CT, Anna Ames,[2] daughter of Mark and Anna (Grice) Ames. She was born 4 Nov 1760, Voluntown, CT, and died 29 Oct 1838, Ontario, NY. She was buried in the Gould Cemetery, Walworth, NY.[3]
Joseph Whitney, son of Joshua Whitney, born 24 Oct 1753, was a soldier in the war of the Revolution, married Anna Eames, the daughter of Mark Eames, of Killingly, CT, about 1784, moved to Granville, Washington County, NY, soon after, followed the occupation of farming, rearing a large family, and in 1827 moved with his son William to Ontario, Wayne County, NY, with whom he lived until his death, 24 Jan 1837, which event was hastened by an injury caused by a colt running against him while driving a number of them to water. In religion a Baptist, as were nearly all his descendants. He resided Granville and Ontario, NY.

Robert Chittenden, b. 15 Dec 1785, CT, d. 15 Mar 1866, Granville, NY. iii. Anne Whitney, b. ca. 1788. She may have been the Ann Smith, aged 69, who was living with Reba and Matilda in 1860; if so she was b. ca. 1791, NY. An Anna Smith, aged 60, was living with William J. and Mary J. (-----) Gould in Walworth, Wayne Co., NY, in 1850. One of William J. Gould's aunts married Anne's brother Parley/Perley, and another married her brother Joseph. The identity of her Smith husband has not been found. iv. Lydia Whitney, b. ca. 1792. v. Joseph Whitney, b. ca. 1793; m. Appana Gould. vi. Reba Whitney, b. ca. 1801, NY; d. after 1860. vii. William Whitney, b. 7 Dec 1798; m. Deborah M. Duel. viii. Betsey Whitney, b. 7 Dec 1798, Granville, NY. ix. Matilda Whitney, b. 20 Jul 1804, Granville, NY; d. 5 Oct 1883; bur. Ontario Center Cemetery, Ontario, NY;[5] m. Ezra Dewell, b. 10 Apr 1804, Granville, NY; d. 8 Aug 1883; resided Ontario Centre, NY.
