Joshua4 Whitney ([probably] Joshua3, David2, Samuel1), probably the son of Joshua3 Whitney, was born circa 1727 (or ca. 1720), Virginia, perhaps in Isle of Wight Co.,[1] and died 1762, Southampton Co., VA.[2]
He married, circa 1746 (or ca. 1750), Virginia, Margaret Joyner, daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth (Smelly) Joyner. She was born ca. 1728, Virginia.[3]
In 1755, Giles Smelly, his wife's brother, mentioned him in his will and named him executor. Giles Smelly died a few weeks later, and Joshua apparently served as executor as he signed the estate inventory 12 Aug 1756.[4]
In 1760, William Bulls named Joshua Whitney as one of his executors, but didn't die until after Joshua.[5]
On 11 Dec 1761, William Norman wrote his will in which he left his whole state "to friend Joshua Whitney, my children having proven to be undutiful and disobedient." Joshua was named executor, but died before his friend did in 1763.[6]
In 1762, Joseph Joyner wrote his will, mentioning his "daughter Margaret Whitney".[7]
The will of Joshua Whitney of Nottoway Parish was recorded in Southampton Will Book 2, p. 3. He made bequests to son Joshua land adj. George Lawrence, Charles Lawrence, Elisha Ballard and Bennett Hilsman; to son Elisha land bought in Isle of Wight of George Brewer and land in Southampton adjoining Giles Joyner, son Giles all the remainder of this tract of land and plantation whereon I now live; wife Margery, daughter Amy Whitney. Executors to acknowledge deed in Isle of Wight to Thomas Lankford for land adjoining John Lankford and William Bulls. Ex. wife Margary and friend John Joyner. D. 18 May 1762, R. 14 Oct 1762. Each of the three boys received a gun, Joshua the largest. Wit. Charles Lawrence, Joshua Miniard, Mary Bland, page 3." - p. 28

"Whitney, Joshua. Exs., Margery Whitney and John Joyner. Paid the levy for Seymour Sweny, who lived a year with the said Whitney; paid William Joyner, Jr. in right of his wife, her part of her father's estate for whom the said Whitney was administrator; paid Jesse Minard his part as above; paid legacies to Joshua, Elisha and Giles Whitney. Examined by Lemuel Jones and Henry Joyner. R. Oct. 8, 1772. Page 5." - p. 56
