Josiah5 Whitney (David4, Benjamin3, John2, John1), son of David4 and Rebecca (Fillebrown) Whitney, was born 22 Nov 1730, Waltham, MA,[1] and died 3 Dec 1800, Waltham, MA.[2]

Josiah married, 15 Jun 1762, Waltham, MA, Sarah Lawrence,[3] daughter of John and Mary (Hammond) Lawrence. She was born 21 Jul 1736[4] or 1737, Waltham, MA, and died 14 Sep 1794, Waltham, MA, aged 59 years. There is mention in the Waltham VR of a Sarah Whitney death in 1795 from a gravestone record.[5] Not mentioned in the will of husband in 1799, so clearly died before that year. Source of the specific 1794 date not given in DB.

From Herb Phelps ([email protected]): He served on 20 Sep 1776 in Waltham, MA; First Company of Militia, Waltham. Same on 29 Nov 1776. He left a will dated 7 May 1799, Waltham: son Josiah; daughter, Rhoda Smith; unmarried daughters Sally, Nancy and Lucy; son Jonathan, executor; witnesses David Wellington, Benja. Lawrence, Stoner Sanderson.

Pierce says the following:[6]

He served in a Waltham company during the Revolutionary War.

On 9 Jan 1801, Waltham, MA, a receipt was given by Anna Whitney, a daughter of Josiah Whitney. On 9 Jan 1801, Waltham, MA, a receipt was given by Amos and Rhoda Smith, a daughter of Josiah Whitney. On 9 Jan 1801, Waltham, MA, a receipt was given by Sarah Whitney, a daughter of Josiah Whitney. On 23 Feb 1801, Waltham, MA, a receipt was given by Josiah Whitney, a son of Josiah Whitney. On 7 Apr 1801, Waltham, MA, his will was proved. On 7 Apr 1801, Waltham, MA, executor's bond was posted by Jonathan Whitney, yeoman, of Waltham, with Amos Smith, yeoman, and David Wellington, gentleman, both of Waltham, sureties. On 8 Jun 1801, Waltham, MA, a receipt was given by Lucy Whitney, a daughter of Josiah Whitney. On 8 Jun 1801, Waltham, MA, a receipt given by Anna Whitney, a daughter of Josiah Whitney. On 8 Jun 1801, Waltham, MA, a receipt was given by Amos and Rhoda Smith, a daughter of Josiah Whitney.

Sarah6 Whitney, b. 18 Apr 1763, Waltham, MA;[7] d. 1 Jun 1846, Waltham, MA, aged 83 years 1 month 12 days, of old age; m.(1) 6 Dec 1803, Waltham, MA, Isaac Hastings.[8] He was b. 12 Oct 1768, Waltham, MA, son of Josiah and Lydia (Ball) Hastings, and died 3 May 1805, Waltham, MA, aged 37 years. She "Mrs." m.(2) 22 Oct 1807, Waltham, MA, Nathan Sanderson, as his second wife. Apparently she had no children.
ii. Josiah Whitney Jr., b. 23 Jun 1765, Waltham, MA;[9] m. Mary Barrett.
iii. Rhoda Whitney, b. 22 Aug 1768, Waltham, MA;[10] d. 25 Feb 1817, Waltham, MA; m. 8 May 1794, Waltham, MA, Amos Smith.[11]
iv. Ruth Whitney, b. say 1770, Waltham, MA. She is not listed in father's will in 1799.
v. Jonathan Whitney, b. 8 May 1772, Waltham, MA;[12] m. Sarah Bedlow.
vi. Anna Whitney, b. ca. 1774, Waltham, MA; d. 18 Aug 1846, Waltham, MA, aged 71 years, of diarrhea; m. 17 Dec 1807, Waltham, MA, Elijah Smith,[13] as his second wife. He m.(1) Lydia Flagg. Children:
a. Isaac Smith, b. 20 Dec 1808, Waltham, MA.
b. Calvin Smith, b. 7 Sep 1811, Waltham, MA.
c. Lucy Ann Smith, b. 14 Oct 1813, Waltham, MA.
