Josiah Whitney, parentage unknown but apparently the brother of the Jeremiah Whitney who d. 1781, Buckingham Co., VA. One possibility for his lineage is (perhaps Jeremiah⁴, Joshua³, David², Samuel¹), perhaps son of Jeremiah⁴ Whitney and an unknown wife, He was born before 1755,^[1] died after 1800.^[2]

In 1775, Josiah Whitney is listed as one of many people who purchased items in the estate sale of Joseph Rhodes of Duplin County, NC.^[3]

Was he related to the Hannah Whitney who married Jeremiah Bass sometime before 1770? They had children born 1770 to 1783, Duplin County, NC.^[4]

Sampson County was formed from Duplin County in 1784.

Was he related to the Elizabeth Whitney who married Isham Royal of Sampson Co., NC? He was b. 1760 and d. 1833. They had ch: Whitney Royal, b. 1792, d. 1869, m. 1805, Sarah Martin, in the War of 1812; John Royal, b. 1794, d. 1862, m. 1802, Susan Benton.^[5]

In 1784, he was listed as owning 400 acres in Sampson County, NC.^[6]
