He married, 15 Oct 1865, Ora A. Shultz. She was born about 1845, MD, and died after 1880.
He served through the war in Company E, 4th Regiment Vermont Volunteers; res Rochester, VT.

i. Mont Elmer10 Whitney, or "Mont Elmore", b. 1 Jun 1866, Hancock, VT;[1] apparently d. before 1900; resided Baltimore, MD.

Probably the "Illiterate" markings are in error, since almost all adults in this schedule have that marking. Probably the census taker recorded the reverse of what he should have. Also, the birth state of Virginia is an obvious error for Vermont.
