Mary Jane7 Whitney (John6, Amos5, Amos4, Nathaniel3, Benjamin2, John1), daughter of John6 and Betsey (Fairbanks) Whitney, was born 1 Feb 1817, Newburgh, ME, and died 28 Mar 1898, Washington, District of Columbia.

She married 28 Nov 1841, Newburgh, ME, Charles Davis Gilmore, son of Rufus and Julitta (Fairbanks) Gilmore. He was born 30 Jul 1819, Newburgh, ME, and died 25 Nov 1884, Washington, District of Columbia.

Charles Davis Gilmore, b. 30 Jul 1819; m. Mary Jane Whitney. He. d. in Washington, D.C., Nov. 1884. Was Deputy Sheriffof Penobscot Co., Maine, and held other prominent

positions. He was a soldier in the Civil War, and obtained the rank, by brevet, of General. After the war he opened a Land and Pension office in Washington; acquired large properties in the West. His widow still resides in Washington, D.C. (1896.)

Commissioned an officer in Company C, Maine 7th Infantry Regiment on 22 Aug 1861. Promoted to Full Major on 08 Aug 1862. Mustered out on 08 Aug 1862. Commissioned an officer in

Company S, Maine 20th Infantry Regiment on 08 Aug 1862.

Promoted to Full Lt Colonel on 20 May 1863. Promoted to Full Colonel on 15 Jun 1864. Mustered out on 29 May 1865.

Both Mary Jane and Charles are buried in the Gilmore-Tarbell Grave Site, Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA.
