Family:Whitney, Nathaniel Stevens (1820-1883)

Nathaniel Stevens⁹ Whitney (John⁸, Oliver⁷, Silas⁶, David⁵, Benjamin⁴, Thomas³, Thomas², John¹), son of John⁸ and Lucy (Leonard) Whitney, was born 2 Dec 1820, Frelighsburg, QC, and died 31 May 1883, Montreal, QC.

He married, 27 Jul 1847, Montreal, QC, Hannah Jane Mills. daughter of John Easton and Hannah (Lyman) Mills. She was born 18 Nov 1830, or 16 Nov 1826, Montreal, QC, and died 3 Jan 1905. [Pierce calls her "Helen I. Mills".--RLW]

The Canadian Illustrated News of Montreal, 7 Jul 1883, says: "Another of Montreal's worthies, the esteemed and widely-beloved gentlemen, Nathaniel S. Whitney, has at last gone over to the majority at the comparatively early age of 62 years.

Mr. Whitney was born at Frelighsburg, on the 2nd December, 1820, and came to Montreal at an early age. Later on he entered into the wholesale dry goods business, and subsequently into the leather business, in which he continued until his death. Mr. Whitney was always identified with measures of progress. In his office was held the first meeting of the Montreal Telegraph company at its organization. He was always foremost in promoting or taking part in the promotion of works of utility, benevolence, and religion. He was largely instrumental in forming the horticultural society of which he was latterly president; was a life governor of the hospital not in name only, but in deeds and activity, as the annual reports have testified; was a trustee of the Mount Royal cemetery; a devoted adherent of the Church of England. He was for many years a lay delegate to the synod, a member of the executive committee, and governor of the Diocesan college. Mr. Whitney came of the good old United Empire loyalist stock, and showed himself a worthy descendant by serving in both winters of the rebellion, although not of the age required by law. In politics he was always a stanch Liberal. He was several times invited to come forward as a candidate for his native country, but always declined. It was while visiting his country residence, 'The Hills,' where he had a large stock farm at Frelighsburg, that he caught the cold resulting in his death. Respected by all alike, for his loving and excellent qualities, he will long be missed, and his death leaves a blank in a large circle which will not soon be filled up." He resided Montreal, QC, 317 Prince Arthur St.

He was born in Montreal, where he attended school, later graduated at college, and soon after entered the employ of Whitney, Wardlow & County, leather merchants. For a number of years past he has been in the leather business on his own account in Montreal; resided s. p., Montreal, QC, 42 Shuter St.
ii.	Mary Elizabeth Whitney, b. 29 Jan 1851, Montreal, QC; d. 17 Nov 1921; m. 25 Feb 1880, Arthur H. Plimsoll; resided Montreal. Children: a. Mary Marguerite Gladys Plimsoll, b. 8 Feb 1881. b. Arthur Reginald Plimsoll, b. 9 Jan 1887.
iii.	Florence Anna Whitney, b. 10 Jan 1856, Montreal, QC; d. after 1911; m. 28 Jun 1882, Montreal, QC, Albert Clarence Lyman; 3 sons: resided Montreal, QC.
iv.	Emma M. Whitney, b. 2 Sep 1861, Montreal, QC; d. 29 Sep 1877, England.

vii.	Arthur Stevens Whitney, b. 5 Sep 1866, Montreal, QC; d. 1920, York, ON; m. 5 Oct 1892, Susie Emma O'Brien, b. 14 Sep 1866. He was born in Frelighsburg, QC; attended the public schools in Montreal, and later was gradated at the St. Paul's school, Concord, NH. Entering the employ of Whitney, Wardlow & County, leather merchants of Montreal, he remained a short time. Soon after he was employed in the same business by J. M. Whitney & County, and in May 1892 engaged in the leather trade on his own account; s. p.; resided 317 Prince Arthur St., Montreal, QC.
viii.	Alice Ethel Whitney, b. 22 Jun 1869, Montreal, QC; m. 24 Aug 1886, Montreal, QC, Charles McClothier, s. p.; resided Montreal, QC.
