Ohio7 Whitney (Silas6, Samuel5, William4, Nathaniel3, John2, John1), son of Silas6 and Sarah (Withington) Whitney,[1] was born 22 Mar 1789, Ashburnham, MA,[2] and died 23 Mar 1870, Ashburnham, MA, aged 81, of kidney disease, cystitis.[3]

He married, 3 Jan 1809, Ashburnham, MA, Mary Bolton,[4] daughter of Capt. Aaron Bolton of Westminster.[5] She was born 21 May 1791, Westminster, MA,[6] and died 30 Aug 1843, aged 52 years, of a bowel complaint.[7]

He married, secondly, 9 Jun 1844, Ashburnham, MA, Mrs. Dorothy (Maynard) Brown,[8] daughter of Stephen and Meriam (Ellis) Maynard.[9] She was born 3 Jan 1806, Ashburnham, MA,[10] and died 8 Aug 1885, Ashburnham, MA, aged 79 years 7 months, of paralysis.[11] She had married firstly, 18 Oct 1823, Ashburnham, MA, John Brown (c1799-1828).

Ohio Whitney was a man of ability and unusual force of character. The record of his life and good works are engraven in the annals of Ashburnham. He was a selectman for several years, and honorably discharged every trust. At all times and under all circumstances he commanded the respect and affectionate regard of his townsmen. Hon. Ohio Whitney was treasurer of Cushing Academy for maany years, and also a member of its executive committee. He also had the singular honor of presiding as moderator at the town meetings for twenty-nine years in succession. He resided Ashburnham, MA.[12]

a. Melvin O. Adams, b. 7 Nov 1847, Ashburnham, MA; m. Mary Colony; attorney; resided Boston. Melvin O. Adams. Esg., son of Joseph and Dolly (Winship) Whitney Adams, was b. in Ashburnham, 7 Nov 1847. He passed his preparatory studies in this town, and at New Ipswich, Appleton Academy, and graduated with honors at Dartmouth College in the able class of 1871. He was sub-master of the Fitchburg High School in 1871-72, and read law with the Hon. Edward Avery, of Boston, and Hon. Amasa Norcross of Fitchburg. He received the degree of Bachelor of Laws from Boston University, 1874 and the same year he was admitted to the Suffolk County bar. Until the year 1876 he continued a legal residence in this town, and was moderator of the annual March meeting 1874, '75, and '76. Mindful of the partiality and appreciative regard of his townsmen, he has responded to many invitations for addresses on miscellaneous subjects. In his professional labors in Boston since 1874, he has been successful, and has won a merited reputation for character and ability. Since 1876 he has been assistant district attorney for the district of Suffolk, and has probably been engaged in the trial of a greater number of the cases than has fallen to the lot of any lawyer of his age in the state. In habit of thought, he is quick and vigorous. In attack or defense his resources are at instant command and all his work is sustained by the weight of integeity and character. Mr. Adams is yet a young man, possessing ability and opportunity to complete a career which has been ably and firmly outlined/

vii. Harriett Jackson Whitney, b. 8 Dec 1820, Ashburnham, MA;[21] d. 16 Dec 1899, Fitchburg, MA, aged 79 years 8 days, of senile debility;[22] m. 10 Mar 1840, Salmon W. Putnam, born Hopkinton, MA, 10 Dec 1815; d. 23 Feb 1872. He went to Ashburnham early in 1837, and for a short time in connection with his elder brother, John, was engaged in business there. Later, the family moved to Fitchburg. In the establishment of the Putnam Machine Company, in the conduct of an extensive business, his life and labors fill an eventful and an interesting page in the annals of a prosperous city. He occupied with credit many positions of trust, was a director in several monetary institutions, and thoroughly identified with the growth and prosperity of the town and city of Fitchburg. The sons have succeeded to the general management of the corporation, and have frequently been elected to positions in municipal affairs. Children:
