Family:Whitney, Rufus Hayden (1826-1911)
Rufus Hayden8 Whitney (David7, Elijah6, Thomas5, Thomas4, Eleazer3, Thomas2, John1), son of David7 and Samaria (Wheeler) Whitney, was born 24 Jan 1826, Westborough, MA,[1] and died 24 Nov 1911, Philadelphia, PA, aged 71 years 11 months [sic].
He married, 7 Apr 1844, Thompsonville, CT, Emily Burton Stevens, daughter of James and Martha Varnum (Barron) Stevens. She was born about May 1828, North Chelmsford, MA, and died after 1900.
He was born in Westborough, MA, and remained on a farm until thirteen years of age, then went into a provision and grocery store until seventeen, when he went to Boston with J. W. Blodget & Company, importers and wholesale dry goods jobbers. Remained with them four years, then went with White, Brown, Davis & Company; worked on a salary for four years, then was taken in as a partner, and remained for six years, then went into business with two other gentlemen; name of firm, Whitney, Crain & Marr. They did the importing and jobbing business of dry goods and made lots of money and after that they lost heavily by the advance of gold and hard debts, and were obliged to compromise with their creditors. He then went with A. Hamilton & Company at a salary of $8,000 per year as buyer both in Europe and here; in two years was taken in as partner. The big fire came and the loss was large and they lost all. After settling with their creditors, he went into his present business of commission broker and has done very well; has been in since 1879. He has always called Boston his home since 1849, still his family lived in Europe for several years and in New York for about two years, but his business has been in Boston all the time; resided Boston, MA, address 75 State St.
