Samuel5 Whitney (Samuel4, Nathaniel3, John2, John1), son of Samuel4 and Anne (Laboree) Whitney, was born 13 Dec 1727, Stratford, CT.[1]
He married firstly, 26 Mar 1751, Stratford, CT, Hannah Judson,[2] daughter of James and Martha (Lewis) Judson. She was born 17 Jul 1729, Stratford, CT, and died 23 Dec 1760, Stratford, CT,[3] and died after 1773.
He married secondly, 4 May 1766, Christ Episcopal Church, Stratford, CT, Martha Howes,[4] parentage, birth, and death unknown. She was also known as Patty. She died after 1788, probably Watertown, CT.
He lived in 1762 at Fairfield, CT.
Phoenix says the following:[5]
- . . . She was pretty surely the daughter of Capt. James and Martha (Lewis) Judson, who were m. in Stratford, 18 Dec. 1712; for "Martha Judson, of Stratford, widow of Capt. James Judson, late of Stratford, deceased," released, 30 Sept. 1754, to "Samuel Whitney and Hannah Whitney, wife to ye sd Samll, both of sd Stratford," all her right of dower in "fifteen acres of land Divided or Distributed and set off to ye sd Hannah wife to ye sd Samll Whitnee of Buckswamp in said Stratford, sd fifteen acres being north on ye land of Willm Curtis, east on David Judson, Joseph Judson, and James Judson's land," &c. She died in Stratford, of small-pox, 23 Dec. 1760. The town gave him "Liberty to erect a Store-House, of about 20 feet in length & 18 broad, under ye Bank of ye Mill river, near ye upper ship yard, at ye Ram pasture, ye place to be fixed by Thos. Hill & James Smedley, a comtte for that purpose, at sd Whitney's cost," 21 Dec 1755. He married (2d), Martha -----, whose maiden name has not been ascertained. Tradition says that he was a soldier in the Revolutionary war, and that he died in the early part of the war, being one of several who were killed by poison. It is said that he was buried in Stratford; possibly, he was a prisoner in New York at the time of his death. Mrs. Patty Whitney (as she was always called), after the death of her husband, lived a widow for many years, during fifteen of which she was mostly confined to her bed by consumption. It is said that she lived in Stratford, Huntington, or Newtown, Conn., perhaps in all of them; living at one time near the house of Landlord Jonathan Scott, who kept a public-house "on the road between Watertown and New Haven," about a mile south of Watertown Village. The date and place of her death are not known. She was a communicant in the P. E. Church.
Pierce says the following:[6]
- Samuel Whitney, b. Stratford, Conn., Dec. 13, 1727; m. Mar. 26, 1751, Hannah Judson, who d. smallpox Dec. 23, 1760; m. 2d Martha -----. He was appointed administrator of his father's estate Feb. 21, 1754. The town gave him liberty to erect a store house of about 20 feet in length and 18 broad under the bank of the Mill river, near the upper ship yard, at the RAM pasture, the place to be fixed by Thomas Hill and James Smedly, a committee for that purpose, at said Whitney's cost. It is said he was a soldier in the Revolutionary war and that he died in the early part of the war, being one of several who were killed by being poisoned. He may have been a prisoner in New York at the time of his death; res. Newtown, Conn.

iii. John Whitney6, bapt. 16 Mar 1767, Christ Episcopal Church, Stratford, CT; a mariner; unmarried; went from home on a voyage and never returned; some of the family think he perished at sea, and others that he was captured, and died in Algiers. He was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. iv. Hannah Whitney, bapt. 1 Mar 1769, Christ Episcopal Church, Stratford, CT; m. 19 Dec 1792, Huntington, CT, Robert Wright,[9] son of Medad and Ruth (Tooker) Wright; settled in Huntington, CT, whence they moved to Harwinton, CT; had several children, among whom were Polly, who m. ----- Castle, Sally, Nancy, Samuel, Isaac, the youngest, and at least one more; but no records have been discovered. Another tradition says that she married ----- Weakins, and lived on Long Hill, CT. There was a Long Hill in Stratford. v. Sarah Whitney, b. ca. 1771, Stratford, CT; bapt. 1 Aug 1775, Christ Episcopal Church, Stratford, CT. Tradition says that she was the most beautiful girl in Newtown, CT, and was engaged to be married; but died before the intended nuptials, of consumption, in Newtown or Huntington, CT. Although the descendants of her brothers, James and Isaac Whitney, had lost all knowledge of each other, at the time of our inquiries, each branch had a distinct tradition of her name and history. vi. Isaac Whitney, b. 1773, Stratford, CT; bapt. 1 Aug 1775, Christ Episcopal Church, Stratford, CT; m. Susanna Bryan.

His second wife Martha was perhaps the Martha Pierce or Price who was born Mar 1733 and married, Apr 1755, Stratford, CT, Isaac Howe, son of Ebenezer and Mary (Brinsmade) Howe. See FamilySearch.org. They had four "Hows" children, all baptized at Christ Episcopal Church, Stratford, CT: Martha, bp. 25 Jan 1756; Benjamin, bp. 16 Oct 1757; Gloriana, bp. 24 Feb 1760; and Charity, bp. 29 Jul 1764. He was buried 5 Jun 1764, Stratford, CT. That left Martha as a widow, available to marry Samuel Whitney as his and her second spouse. As to her parentage, she could be a daughter of Benjamin and Mary (Birch) Pierce, and sister of Betty Pearce who married Ephraim Beers in the same church 19 Jun 1746.
