Family:Whitney, Samuel (1749-1822)

Samuel⁵ Whitney (John⁴, Henry³, John², Henry¹), son of John⁴ and Hephzibah (Olmstead) Whitney, was born 12 Oct 1749, Ridgefield, CT, and died 12 Jul 1822, Kirkland, NY, aged 72 years.

He married, 3 or 5 Jan 1775, Stockbridge, MA, Mary St. John,^[1] daughter of Mark and Anna (Gay) St. John, and granddaughter of Matthew and Anne³ (Whitney) St. John (and hence his second cousin). She was born 14 Jan 1755, Sharon, CT, and died 14 Feb 1834, Kirkland, NY, aged 79 years.

Phoenix says the following:

... a farmer .... They lived for a few years, perhaps till after the Revolutionary War, in Stockbridge, Mass., after which he went with his family to the State of New York, living for a time in the large old town of Johnstown, Montgomery Co. (part of which is now in Fulton Co., part in Hamilton Co., and part in Montgomery Co.), also for a time in the town of German Flats, perhaps in that part which is now Warren, Herkimer Co., and possibly, also in Galway, Saratoga Co. In October, 1793, he settled on the Brothertown Indian lands, in Paris, now Kirkland, N.Y., where he bought one hundred acres of land from the State, a part of which lies in the present town of Marshall, the town-line crossing the farm, receiving his deed 1 Sept. 1795; and his grandchildren still own and occupy the farm, though the deed has not yet been proved, acknowledged or recorded. On this farm they died; he, 12 July 1822, aged 72 years; and she, 14 Feb. 1834, aged 79 years. They were buried in a small cemetery on their farm, which is now known as the Whitney Cemetery.

i.	Cynthia6 Whitney, b. Stockbridge, MA; d. Kirkland, NY, aged about 20 years, and was buried in the Baptist cemetery on Post Street, about two and a half miles east of her father's homestead.
ii.	Jared Whitney, b. 27 Jun 1776, Stockbridge, MA; m.(1) Polly White; m.(2) Patience Husted.
iii.	Stephen Whitney, b. 14 Aug 1778, NY; m. Sally Finney.
iv.	John Whitney, b. 23 Aug 1781, Galway, NY; m.(1) Patty Chase; m.(2) Polly Whitney.
v.	Sabra Whitney, b. ca. 1783; d. Kirkland, NY, aged about 13 years, and was buried in the Baptist cemetery on Post Street, about two and a half miles east of her father's house.
vi.	Samuel Whitney, b. 4 Jun 1785; a farmer; married in Clinton, N. Y., about 1805, Huldah Hopkins, who was born 14 Jan. 1780, and lived, at the time of her marriage, with her aunt, Mrs. Elisha Gridley, her parents being dead. They settled in Henderson, N. Y., where he died in the "sickly season," 7 Sept 1828, without children. She married (2d) Isaac Wodell, of Ellisburgh, N. Y., who died there, 5 May 1853, in his 77th year. She died in Ellisburgh, 18 Nov. 1866, "aged 80 years, 10 months, and 4 days," and was buried in the Ellisburgh Cemetery, beside her second husband.
vii.	Erastus Whitney, b. 10 Mar 1787; m.(1) Hannah Jerome; m.(2) Betsey Wood.
viii.	Anna Whitney, b. 16 Aug 1789, Warren, NY; m. Tilley Flint Snow.
ix.	Allen Whitney, b. 1792, Johnstown or Warren, NY; d. Kirkland, NY, aged about 7 years, and was buried in the Baptist cemetery on Post Street, about two and a half miles east of his father's homestead in Kirkland.
x.	Mary Whitney, b. 5 Apr 1795, Kirkland, NY; m. 2 Oct 1838, Collins Boomer, as his second wife, a farmer, of Ellisburgh, N.Y., who was born near Fall River, in Rhode Island, in May 1787. He was son of Benjamin and Mary (Collins) Boomer, who afterward lived on a farm in Ellisburgh, which descended to their son. She died in Ellisburgh, N.Y., 24 Oct 1856, having had no children, and was buried in the Evergreen Cemetery at Roberts Corners, in Henderson, N.Y. He died in Adams, Jefferson Co., N.Y., 6 Sept. 1866. His first wife was Harriet Finn.
