Notes
Phoenix says the following:
- Samuel Whitney, b. at Norwalk, Conn.; was living at Norwalk, and fully fourteen years old, 30 Nov. 1752, when he chose John Seymour as his guardian; since which nothing is known of him, unless he was that Samuel Whitney, who, with his wife Sarah, was living at Woodbury, Conn., from 1772 to 1777.
That would make his lineage Samuel5 Whitney (Elijah4, Richard3, John2, Henry1), son of Elijah4 and Rebecca (Seymour) Whitney, and born say 1737, Norwalk, CT.[7]
Sandiford makes his lineage Samuel5 Whitney (Enoch4, Ebenezer3, Richard2, John1), son of Enoch4 and Thankful (Parke) Whitney, and born 24 May 1734, Plainfield, CT, and baptized 7 Jul 1743, Preston, CT. He says exactly this:
Samuel, b. May 24, 1734, Plainfield, Conn. (v) d. Sept. 30, 1812, Woodbury, Conn. (Age 77) (v) m. --------, Sarah ------- (d.Sept. 14, 1796, Woodbury. (v) Ch: Samuel, b. 1772, d. 1776, Woodbury. (v) Reuben, b. 1777, d. 1796, Woodbury. (v)
Here (v) refers to the vital records of the town in question.[8]
Which of these ancestries is right is an unresolved issue.
