Walter Whitney

Walter8 Whitney (Ohio7, Silas6, Samuel5, William4, Nathaniel3, John2, John1), son of Ohio7 and Mary (Bolton) Whitney, was born 1 Jan 1825, Ashburnham, MA, and died 23 Jul 1867, Fitchburg, MA, aged 42 years 6 months 23 days, of cholera morbus.[1]

He married, 1 May 1853, Ashburnham or Petersham, MA, Elvira Dunn, of Petersham, MA, daughter of John and Abigail (Jackson) Dunn.[2] She was born 16 Dec 1827, Westminster, MA, and died after 1910.

She resided in Dedham, MA.

He was educated at the Westminster, MA, academy and Westfield normal school; he was for several years a teacher in the public schools of West Fitchburg and Ashburnham, and was successful both as an instructor and disciplinarian. He was a member of the school board in the town of Ashburnham. He removed to Fitchburg in 1854 and lived there till the time of his death, 23 Jul 1867. He was a member of the Trinitarian church and for several years the superintendent of the Sabbath-school. Although a man of liberal ideas, he was very conscientious and religious, and was a guide to many a seeker after divine truth. He had a diction that was remarkably impressive and original; many of his ideas were remembered and quoted for years after his death. It was said at the time of his death that no funeral of a private individual had ever called forth in that city so many people; it was the last debt of honor they could pay the man they had long respected for his candor, honesty, amiable traits of character and unfailing kindness. He resided Fitchburg, MA.

iii. Mary Elvira Whitney, b. 15 May 1859, Fitchburg, MA;[5] d. 30 Mar 1861, Fitchburg, MA, aged 1 year 10 months 15 days, of measles and typhoid pneumonia.[6]
iv. Jessie Dunn Whitney, b. 19 May 1862, Fitchburg, MA;[7] resided Ashburnham. Jessie Dunn Whitney was born at Fitchburg, MA. She was fitted for college in the Fitchburg high school and was a member of the class of 1879. She was admitted to Boston University in 1879, but did not become a student of that institution. She afterward completed her education by taking special courses at Cornell and Smith colleges. She has taught in the public schools of Westminster, Ashburnham, and Wareham, MA. She is now (1894) teaching her fifth year as assistant in the Wareham high school. She has always been a very conscientious, popular, and successful teacher. She m. 12 Aug 1897, Dover, NH, Arthur Burgess Larchar,[8] son of William J. and Catherine S. (Burgess) Larchar.

v. Frederic Ernest Whitney, b. 18 Jan 1865, Fitchburg, MA;[9] d. after 1930. He was b. Fitchburg, MA, where he was prepared for college. Although beginning his business career in Boston, he soon turned his attention to New York, and at the age of nineteen he set foot in the latter city, and shortly after his arrival entered the employ of a large mercantile house, where he was rapidly promoted, and at the age of twenty-two had embarked in business on his own account. In the meantime he had become a communicant of the Episcopal church and identified himself with St. Ambrose's parish, then under the charge of the Rev. Joseph Bloomfield Wetherill, and in his twenty-first year was elected a vestryman of this parish. A few years later becoming interested in the Church Kalendar, a prominent and widely know publication in the Episcopal church, he was elected president of the Church Kalendar Company, of New York, and this position he now holds. On 26 Nov 1890, at the Church of the Transfiguration, New York, he was joined in holy matrimony to Miss Agatha G. Hays (youngest daughter of David and Anna McCutcheon Hays), of Newburgh-on-the-Hudson, a lady with charming manners and of high literary attainments, having been for several years a successful journalist in New York City and a contributor to the leading metropolitan newspapers. Mr. and Mrs. Whitney have made their home in Newburgh-on-the-Hudson, New York, for the past two years. She was b. Aug 1858, d. after 1930. No children shown in census records.
