William6 Whitney (Thomas5, William4, William3, Joshua2, John1), son of Thomas5 and Elizabeth (Boardman) Whitney, was born 1755, Sheffield, MA, and died 18 Jan 1810, Union, NY.

He married, circa 1780, Hillsdale, NY, Ruth Rodman, daughter of Joseph and Mary (West) Rodman. She was born 16 Mar 1759, Hillsdale, NY.

"(Gen.) William6 WHITNEY was a private in the Revolution in a Claverack Battalion, Albany County Militia, along with his brother Joshua6, a captain. He was appointed Ensign Columbia Co., in 1786, Lieutenant same year, Captain of Light Infantry of Tioga Co., in 1792, Major in 1793, Lieut. Col., in 1802, Brigadier General in 1804 and resigned in 1808. He died 18 Jan 1810. Joshua6 and William6, with a friend, possibly a relative, removed to Broome county, New York, from Hillsdale, Columbia Co., NY, in the spring of 1787, settling in what afterward became the city of Binghamton. They were the second party of settlers and first to come in wagons. Gen. William married, possibly Mary ROSE or ROSENBERRY."

ii. Mary "Polly" Whitney, b. 21 Jul 1781; bapt. 14 Aug 1786, Hillsdale, NY; d. 2 Jul 1814, Conklin, NY; m. 17 May 1801, Joseph Lounsbury.
iii. Ruth Whitney, b. about 1783; m. Benjamin West.
iv. John Rodman Whitney, b. 1786, bapt. 14 Aug 1786, Hillsdale, NY; m.(1) Catherine Schoonover; m.(2) Sallie Spencer.
v. Sarah Whitney, b. about 1788; m. Colwell Cook, and had a son William Whitney Cook.
vi. Rhoda Whitney; b. about 1790; m. 16 Oct 1809, Samuel Hardy, and lived at or near Binghamton where she died 16 Feb 1833. Samuel HARDY, Sr., married Mrs. Elizabeth (Stout) Twining exactly one year from the death of his wife, Rhoda . . . . Mr. and Mrs. Hardy came to Wellington, OH, and lived on a farm until he was too old to work, when he went to live with his son Samuel, in Camden, and died in 1862 at the age of 92.
