Family:Whitney, William (1818-1895)
William7 Whitney (Henry6, John5, Abraham4, Joseph3, John2, Henry1), son of Henry6 and Lucy (Grumman) Whitney, was born 19 Jun 1818, Wilton, CT, and died 20 Oct 1895, Broken Bow, NE. He was buried in Custer Center Cemetery, Broken Bow, NE.[1]
He married firstly, 25 Dec 1838, Chillicothe, OH, Mary Ressell, daughter of Philip and Catharine (Crotzer) Ressell. She was born 4 Sep 1822, Harrisburg, PA, and died 2 Mar 1859, Marion, IA, aged 35 years 5 months 27 days. She was buried there in the Hickory Grove Cemetery, Henry County, IA.[2]
He married secondly, 12 Nov 1861, Wayne, IA, Ann Eliza Miller, daughter of Milton and Cineh (Plummer) Miller. She was born 13 Sep 1824, St. Clairsville, OH, and died 7 Feb 1913, Broken Bow, NE. She was buried in Custer Center Cemetery, Broken Bow, NE.[3]
Phoenix says the following:
- ". . . a black-smith; moved with his parents to Sharon, now Shelby, Ohio, reaching there on the day that he was one year old; went to Fairfield Co., Ohio, in the Winter of 1837, removing to Piketon, Ohio, in the next Spring, to Ross Co., Ohio, in the following Winter, and to Kingston, in Tippecanoe township, in Aug. 1838. . . . . They dwelt, first, in Kingston, Ohio; removed, in 1844, to Middletown, Ind.; thence to Putnam Co., and again to Tipecanoe Co., Ind.; and settled, 4 Oct. 1853, in Marion, Iowa, nine miles from Mount Pleasant, the county-seat. They were living near Mount Pleasant, in 1873, and he was engaged in the cultivation of his fine farm."
From "Portrait and Biographical Album of Henry County, Iowa," Chicago, Acme Publishing Company, 1888, p. 357:
"WILLIAM HENRY WHITNEY, architect, carpenter and builder, Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, was born in Ross County, Ohio, Feb. 7, 1840, and is the son of William and Mary A. [Ressel] Whitney, the former a native of Connecticut and the latter of Pennsylvania. They were married in Ross County, Ohio, to which point their respective families had moved at an early day. William, who traces his ancestry back to nearly 1400 -- is of English descent, and early in life learned the trade of a blacksmith, at which trade he worked for many years.
"In 1845 he moved with his family to Indiana, locating first in Putnam County, where he remained a short time, and then moved to Montgomery, and later to Tippecanoe County, in the same State. While in Indiana, he combined farming with blacksmithing. In 1854 he moved to Mt. Pleasant, Henry Co., Iowa, where he remained a short time, working at his trade, and then moved to a farm in Marion Township, having entered 160 acres of land. Later he sold sixty acres, retaining the remainder till his removal to Nebraska, in February, 1888.
"To William and Mary A. Whitney were born six children, of whom five are yet living. Mrs. Whitney dying in 1859, in 1861 Mr. Whitney wedded Ann Eliza Miller, by whom he had two children. For many years William Whitney has been a devoted member of the Methodist Episcopal Church."

Mary Melinda Whitney, b. 1 Mar 1843, Kingston, OH; d. 22 May 1848, Middletown, IN, and was buried there. iv. Alice Jane Whitney, b. 25 Apr 1846, New Maysville, IN; d. 22 Jan 1922, ; m. 27 Aug 1867, Henry Co., IA, Isaac Daniel Royce, a farmer, of Jackson, NE. They settled at Jackson, NE, and were living there in 1873. v. John Philip Whitney, b. 7 Oct 1848, Wayne, IN; m. Elizabeth Ann Bozarth. vi. Joseph Vernon Whitney, b. 4 Aug 1853, Tippecanoe, IN; d. 4 Jan 1909, Broken Bow, NE; bur. Custer Center Cemetery, Broken Bow, NE;[4] m. Rebecca Ann Carter. vii. Sarah Maria Whitney, b. 20 Aug 1856, Marion, IA; d. 1920, CO.

Cineh Lauretta Whitney, b. 22 Dec 1862, Marion, IA; d. 10 feb 1863, Marion, IA, and was buried in Prairie Grove Cemetery, at the Friends' meeting-house, called Prairie Grove chapel, in Wayne Twp., IA, also called Friends Cemetery, Olds, IL.[5] ix. Milton Miller Whitney, b. 24 Oct 1865, Marion, IA; m. Anna H. Heer.
