Family:Whitney, Charles (1828-1887)

Charles⁹ Whitney (David⁸, Jonathan⁷, Jonathan⁶, Joseph⁵, Benjamin⁴, Joseph³, John², John¹), son of David⁸ and Catherine (Horn) Whitney, was born 11 Dec 1828,^[1] Southborough, MA, and died 18 Sep 1887, Newton, MA, aged 59 years 9 months 7 days, of apoplexy; merchant.^[2] He was buried in Mount Auburn Cemetery, Watertown, MA.

He married, 25 Aug 1851, Lowell, MA, Sarah Kimball Bradley, daughter of John and Lydia A. (-----) Bradley.^[3] She was born 8 Apr 1827, Concord, NH, and died 1 Aug 1889 [but no record found in MA].

He was born in Watertown, MA, and was the eldest of a family of four sons, all of whom have been prominently identified with the lumber interests. He attended school at Westford, MA, and later at Lawrence academy, Groton. In 1848 he went to Lowell and entered the employ of his uncle, Samuel Horn, as clerk. His father and brother, David, were engaged in the lumber traffic in a small way, and as the business extended Charles left Mr. Horn and joined them. This little firm was the nucleus of what eventually proved to be the largest lumber concern in the United States. David went to Detroit, MI, and later they formed a combination of the large firms of D. N. Skillings & Company and Lawrence Barnes & Company, and opened an office in Boston. In addition to the immense lumber interests he was a large owner of land in the Back Bay district, in Boston, and built the Hotel Vendome, a large and elegant hotel on Commonwealth Ave. He made his home here during the winter for a number of years. He was president of the Wamiset National Bank of Lowell for more then twenty years; also vice-president of the Merrimack River Savings Bank, and director of a Bank in Boston, and of the Union Cotton Mills of Fall River. Personally he was a man of unobtrusive manner but very genial and of a kindly disposition. He was emphatically a business man and cared nothing for political office. He was very charitable and a good friend to the poor. He resided Lowell, MA.

(Roberts) Davis, b. 30 Aug 1844, North Andover, MA.[5] He is a manufacturer of woolen machinery; resided in the winter at 243 Beacon Street, Boston, and in the summer at North Andover, MA. Mr. Davis is a son of the late Hon. George L. Davis, of North Andover, was born in that town. He graduated from Phillips academy, Andover, and from the Scientific school at Harvard college. He then became a member of the firm of Davis & Furber, a firm established many years ago for the manufacturing of woolen machinery and card clothing. Children: a. Madeline Davis, b. 10 Dec 1878. b. Charles Whitney Davis, b. 12 Apr 1881. c. Dorthy Davis, b. 12 Feb 1890.

Katherine A. Whitney, b. 27 Nov 1861, Lowell, MA;[6] resided Hotel Vendome, Boston, MA; d. 21 Oct 1909, 18 Fairfield Street, Boston, MA, aged 47 years 10 months 24 days, of pneumonia, unmarried.[7]
