Eli Whitney (Jacob M., James), son of Jacob M. and Nellie (Freeman) Whitney was born 19 Oct 1829, Shandaken, Ulster Co., NY, and died 19 May 1895. He was buried in Shandaken Rural Cemetery, Shandaken, Ulster Co., NY. Gravestone has "Ely" Whitney.

He married, before 1854, Freelove Barnhart. She was born Sep 1833, and died 4 Apr 1902, Andes, Delaware Co., NY.

Eli Whitney served during the Civil War as a Private in Company E, 144th Regiment, New York Infantry. Date of enlistment 22 Feb 1864, date of discharge 25 June 1865, at Hilton Head, SC. According to U.S. Civil War Soldier Records and Profiles (Ancestry.com, 2009), he enlisted in Company K on 29 Sep 1864. It was not unusual to begin service in one company and be transferred later to another company.

Following Eli's death in May 1895, his widow, Freelove Whitney, filed for a pension 22 July 1895, appl. no. 618,113, certificate no. 417,113.
