James Edward Whitney (Thomas Hendly, Elisha), son of Thomas Hendly and Salome P. (Kniffin) Whitney, was born 5 Nov 1836, Springfield, NS, and died 21 May 1911.
He married, 23 Jan 1861, Newburyport, MA, Susan Simpson, daughter of John and Susan (Swift) Simpson.[1] She was born 5 Jun 1833, Newburyport, MA, and died 16 Mar 1928.
He was a machinist, and lived on Sycamore St., Somerville, MA.

Winnifred Elizabeth Whitney, b. 4 Aug 1875, MA; d. 31 Jul 1877, Somerville, MA, aged 1 year 11 months 27 days, of diarrhea and teething.[5] vii. Dorothy Bass Whitney, b. 30 Apr 1877, MA, or "Dora B." b. 10 Apr 1877, Somerville, MA;[6] d. after 1940, then living in Newburyport, MA.
