Family:Whitney, William (c1819-a1870)
William Whitney, parentage unknown (but see Notes below), was born circa 1819, MA, but said 4 Oct 1817, and died 1879, said 1 Oct 1879.[1] He was buried 3 Oct 1879, in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis, IN.[2]
He married, 5 Apr 1848, Highland Co., OH, Sarah Ann Scott, daughter of David and Ann McElfrish Hale (Cummins) Scott.[3] She was born circa 1827, MD, said 21 Jul 1826, Frederick Co., MD, and died after 1880.

i. Harriet Whitney, b. 15 Oct 1849, Dayton, OH; d. 11 Jul 1924, Detroit, MI;[4] m. Frank Bird. ii. Josephine Whitney, b. 25 Oct 1851, Columbus, OH; d. 7 Apr 1925, Grand Rapids, MI; m. Norton Edwards Alexander,[5] b. ca. 1846, IN. Children: a. Fredrick Alexander, b. ca. 1872, IN.
iii. William S. Whitney, b. ca. 1862, OH; d. after 1880; m. 16 Aug 1882, Indianapolis, IN, Jessie Dumont.
Notes
A descendant of Harriet Whitney Bird has in her possession a family heirloom ring that is inscribed "Eliza M Whitney, obt. Jan 22, 1822 - AE* 32". This could be a clue as to who William's family might have been. According to this clue, it seems likely that the above William was a son of William7 and Sarah (Butler) Whitney of Boston. The elder William had a sister Betsey Marshall7 Whitney who was baptized 31 May 1789, Boston, MA, who is a likely candidate for "Eliza M Whitney" of the ring.
The following William Whitneys were born between 1817 and 1821 in MA, according to MA Vital Records to 1850 on NEHGS:
- Charles William, s. Charles and Dolly, Aug. 25, 1817, Shirley. This William d. 1820.
- William, s. Luke and Cyntha, Aug. 30, 1817, Gardner. He supposedly m. Caroline Pierce.
- William, s. W[illia]m, parents both deceased, bp. Sept. 6, 1817. C. R. 6., Gloucester. Nothing is further known of this William.
- William, s. Samuel and Fanny, Sept. 6, 1818, Shrewsbury. This William m. and res. Chicago.
- William Michael, s. Michael and Nancy, June 12, 1820, Beverly. He m. Ann Augusta Morse, and res. Beverly, MA
- William-Foster, s. William and Zilpah, Aug. 17, 1820, Northboro. He m. and res. Brooklyn, NY.
