Welcome!

Welcome to the Whitney Research Group website. I've taken the data that you entered on your lineage page and have moved it to your user page, which is where you would want to place free flowing information such as this. I then took that information and updated your lineage list accordingly, linking to a new page for Horace Dexter Whitney that I also created.

I then did a little research to see if I could identify his parents. There were 8 Whitney families in Addison Co., VT in 1830, but only 5 who had a son of the correct age to be Horace. Two of these have been identified (both Olivers), two have not (those in Shoreham), and I have now tentatively identified the last, a certain John Whitney of Middlebury.

I believe the John Whitney who resided in Middlebury in 1830 was Family:Whitney, John (21 Apr 1796-1859). Nothing much of him is known after his marriage, other than that he had a daughter who later resided in Ann Arbor Michigan! I think I have found him in Ann Arbor in 1850, see here. Note that he was listed as a Cooper (barrel maker) and merchant.

I believe that I have located Horace Dexter Whitney in 1850 - he was probably the "Dexter Horace Whitney" listed in Parma, MI, age 22, listed as a cooper. Hmmm... a cooper like his father??? Also note that this John Whitney had a son Charles, as did Horace.
