John Rodman7 Whitney (William6, Thomas5, William4, William3, Joshua2, John1), son of William6 and Ruth (Rodman) Whitney, was born 1786, Hillsdale, NY, and died 10 Nov 1857, Camden, OH, aged 71 years. He was buried in the Camden Cemetery, Camden, OH.
He married firstly, about 1806, Broome Co., NY, Catherine Schoonover, daughter of Nicholas and Rachel (Van Auken) Schoonover. She was born 1 Jul 1789, Walpack, Sussex Co., NJ, and died about 1824, Newton, Sussex Co., NJ.
He married secondly, Sallie Spencer. She was born about 1801, and died 1866, Weston, Wood Co., OH.
He was a soldier in the War of 1812. John R. WHITNEY moved to Camden township, Lorain county, OH, in 1836, but must have lived in Rochester, same county, in 1842. In 1850 he received a deed of twenty five acres of land in the east part of Camden, and which he deeded to his son Elisha in 1854.
Children of John Rodman7 and Catherine (Schoonover) Whitney:
i. William W.8 Whitney, b. 9 Mar 1807; m. Ann Sigsworth. ii. John Rodman Whitney, Jr., b. 12 Oct 1808; m. Emma Jane Farmer (or Eunice Jane Farmer). iii. Hiram Whitney, b. 24 May 1812; m.(1) Charlotte Appleby; m.(2) Mary Louisa Juckett. iv. Rachel Whitney, b. 1813; d. 1874, PA; m. 17 Aug 1833, Thomas Curtis; resided Wayne Co., PA. v. Calvin Whitney, b. 30 May 1815; m. Emma Lucy Morse. vi. Joshua Lafayette Whitney, b. 5 Sep 1819; m. Mehitable Head. vii. Henry S. Whitney, b. 18 Feb 1821, Newton, NJ; m.(1) Hannah Shay; m.(2) Catherine Gunn. viii. Caroline Whitney, b. 7 Feb 1823; Daniel Wood; resided Middletown, NY.
Note
There were probably two or three more who died in infancy. Another, Hannah, has been credited to this family, but the date of her birth is only sixteen or seventeen years later than that of John R., which makes it improbable (but not impossible) that she was a member of this family.
Children of John Rodman7 and Sallie (Spencer) Whitney:
ix. Rhoda8 Whitney, b. ca. 1825, Binghamton, NY; d. young. x. Calista Whitney, b. ca. Jul 1826, Binghamton, NY; d. young. xi. Elydia Whitney, b. ca. Dec 1827, Binghamton, NY; d. young. xii.
