Family:Whitney, Edward Winslow (1801-1848)

Edward Winslow⁷ Whitney (Samuel Winslow⁶, Ephraim⁵, Jonas⁴, Moses³, Richard², John¹), son of Samuel Winslow⁶ and Pamela (-----) Whitney, was born 1801, Brattleboro, VT, and died 1 Jun 1848, Albany, NY.

He married, 22 Jan 1821, Brattleboro, VT, or 24 Jan 1821, Dummerston, VT, Lavinia Bruce Bemis,^[1] daughter of Elias and Experience (Kendrick) Bemis. She was born 16 Aug 1798, Dummerston, VT, and died 25 Aug 1854, Fort Covington, NY.

Edward Winslow Whitney was a tanner and currier by trade; worked at his trade in Keene, NH. Afterward proprietor of the Emerald House, Keene; was interested in a line of stages from Keene to Boston, of which line Benjamin Cheney, of Cheney, Fiske & Company was driver. From Keene he moved to Albany, NY, where he took charge of the Franklin House, near the head of State St., directly opposite the then railroad depot. He resided Dummerston, VT, and Fort Covington, and Albany, NY.

i.	Elias Bemis8 Whitney, b. 2 Dec 1821, NY; m.(1) Kate Craft; m.(2) Rhonda S. Burleigh.
ii.	Lemuel Bannister Whitney, b. ca. 1822; d. unmarried; was killed 4 Feb 1850, aged 27 years, by explosion in Hague Street, NY.[2]
iii.	Elizabeth Parsilla Whitney, b. 3 Jun 1824, VT; d. May 1893, Waukegan, IL; m. G. B. J. Sawyer, s. p.
iv.	Charles Marsh Whitney, b. 10 Feb 1828; m. Delia Minerva Safford.
v.	Edward Sydney Whitney, b. ca. 1829-1830; d. May 1861, Malone, NY. The gravestone of Edward S. Whitney lies in the Fort Covington Cemetery, Fort Covington, NY, and says he died 12 Jun 1861, in his 32nd year.[3]
vi.	Mary Jane Whitney, b. 11 Mar 1835; m. 24 Dec 1856, Edward W.; b. 30 May 1834. He was born in Chateaugay, NY; went to Chicago in the early fifties, about 1854; moved thence in a year or so to Waukegan, where he was married and where, with the exception of one year - about 1858-9 - he has since lived. During that year he was in Keokuk, IA. He has always been in the dry goods or general merchandise business, beginning operations for himself in 1869 or 70 in the firm of Huson & Upham, in 1872 or 73 alone and in 1888 becoming a member of his present firm, G. R. Lyon & Company. About 1880 and for a few years thereafter, he was active in local politics and held the office of supervisor for Waukegan in Lake county. Children: a. Edward Darwin Upham, b. 13 Mar 1858; unmarried; 307 People's Bank Bldg., Denver, CO. During the years 1875 to 1880 he was a teacher in Lake county schools, the last three years being in the Waukegan city schools. He graduated from Amherst College, degree B. A. in 1884, and the following year was principal of the Williams Academy and Stockbridge High School at Stockbridge, MA. He continued his law studies, theretofore begun under Judge Francis E. Clark, of Waukegan in the office of Stiles & Lewis of Chicago, and was admitted to the Illinois bar in Sep 1886. He lived in Lincoln, NE, from Nov 1886, till Jun 1887 when he went to Colorado. Is a lawyer in general practice.
