Josiah Marshall7 Whitney (Daniel6, Josiah5, Richard4, Richard3, Richard2, John1), son of Daniel6 and Hannah (Shedd) Whitney; born in Boston, 19 Jan 1814; married at Astoria, New York, 16 May 1839, Mary Jane Ayers; born 8 Sep 1820.
Josiah M. Whitney located at Astoria in the year 1839, the place at that time being quite a wilderness and reached by flat boat horse power from where 86 East River now is located. A mason and builder by occupation, he built most of the best houses in the place, and for upward of 40 years maintained a retail building material and coal yard business, but gave it up in 1880. He was village trustee and school trustee several times, and president of the board of village trustees at the time of the village being taken over by the city in 1871. Has held the offices of school commissioner and assessor under city government; has retired from business; resided Astoria, Long Island, New York.
