George Washington7 Whitney (Joseph6, Caleb5, Jonathan4, Richard3, Richard2, John1), son of Joseph6 and Esther (Crittenden) Whitney, was born c. 1803, Utica, NY,[1] and died 28 February 1882, Phillipston, MA.[2]

Marriage intentions were published 26 Aug 1838, Hubbardston, MA, for him and Abigail Sawyer "of Templeton". He "of Hubbardston" married, 19 Sep 1838, Templeton, MA, Abigail Sawyer,[3] daughter of Solomon and Abigail (Wheeler) Sawyer. She was born about 26 Mar 1797, Sterling, MA, and died 1 Jan 1859, Gardner, MA, aged 61 years 9 months 5 days, of consumption.[4]

He married, 22 Oct 1859, Gardner, MA, Maria Arvilla Tenney, daughter of John and Arvilla (Monroe) Tenney. She was born about 7 Apr 1840, Temple, NH,[5] and died 13 Dec 1908, Pepperell, MA, aged 68 years 8 months 6 days, of cerebral hemorrhage.[6] She married secondly, 30 Aug 1899, Petersham, MA, Franklin D. Hill, son of Joseph and Mary (Rogers) Hill.[7] They may have been divorced or annulled. She married secondly, 4 Jul 1900, Troy, NH, Charles L. Blood, as his third wife, son of Isaiah and Rebecca (Jenkins) Blood,[8] born about 10 Aug 1836, Mason, NH, died 21 Jan 1910, Pepperell, MA, aged 73 years 5 months 11 days, of disease of heart.

Children of George Washington7 and Abigail (Sawyer) Whitney, if any, unknown.

Notes

Maria appears as Maria Hopkins in 1900 Federal census for Troy, Cheshire Co., NH, with daughter Mary Ellen and family. It also appears on her death certificate as her maiden name. No explanation of that surname is apparent. Could there have been a Hopkins husband between Whitney and Hill? What happened to Hill, freeing her to marry Blood?

Her marriages to Hill and Blood both are called her second. No explanation of that fact is apparent, either.
