Family:Whitney, Lemuel (1764-1847)
Judge Lemuel6 Whitney (Ephraim5, Jonas4, Moses3, Richard2, John1), son of Ephraim5 and Marcy (Winslow) Whitney, was born 18 Oct 1764, Petersham, MA,[1] and died 17 Apr 1847, Brattleboro, VT.
He married firstly, 6 Sep 1787, Petersham, MA, Lydia Bryant.[2] She was born about Apr 1767, and died 27 May 1800, West Springfield, MA, aged 33 years 1 month.[3]
Marriage intentions were published 19 Feb 1802, Conway, MA, for him "Esq." "of Brattleborough, Vt." and his second wife Ruth Banister "of Conway",[4] daughter of John and Sarah (Adams) Banister. She was born 4 Feb 1779, Brookfield, MA, and apparently died between 1840 and 1850.
Hon. Lemuel Whitney was born in Petersham, MA. He moved to Vermont in 1785, and first resided in Newfane, where he was sheriff of the county and one of the prominent men in that part of the state. By trade he was a silversmith. In 1790 he moved to Brattleboro, and at once took a leading part in the affairs of that place. For ten years he was representative; from 1801 to 1824 clerk of the Supreme Court; 1801 to 1820 clerk of the county; 1817 to 1828 judge of probate; 1790 to 1847 justice of the peace. He was retentive in memory, frank, free and fearless in the expression of his sentiments. He resided Petersham, MA, and Brattleboro, VT.
