James Lawton8 Whitney (Richard7, James6, Richard5, Richard4, Richard3, Richard2, John1), son of Richard7 and Sally (Turner) Whitney, was born 2 Feb 1817, Harvard, MA, and died 29 Aug 1882, Harvard, MA, aged 63 years 6 months 27 days, of chronic [?Weimhoed?].[1]

He "of Harvard" married firstly, 7 Apr 1842, Cambridge, MA, Elizabeth Tilton,[2] daughter of Oliver and Martha (-----) Tilton. She was born about 29 Jun 1818, Brighton, MA, and died 10 Jun 1863, Harvard, MA, aged 44 years 11 months 10 days, of heart disease.[3]

He married secondly, 27 Mar 1864, Harvard, MA, Ann Doherty, daughter of Meshach A. and Bedelia (-----) Doherty.[4] She was born about 1835, Milton, MA, or Ireland.

He was born in Harvard, where he always resided, an extensive farmer and highly respected citizen. From 1851-53 he was a member of the board of selectmen. He resided Harvard, MA.

James Lawton8 and Elizabeth (Tilton) Whitney, if any, unknown. None appear in the 1850, 1855, 1860, or 1870 censuses.

iii. Susan L. Whitney, b. 23 May 1867, Harvard, MA;[10] d. 11 Oct 1867, Harvard, MA, aged 4 months 2 days, of cholera infantum.[11]
iv. Abby Turner Whitney, b. 30 Nov 1868, Harvard, MA;[12] m. 29 Nov 1894, Ayer or Harvard, MA, Walter R. Green, b. ca. 1867, Canada, son of Royal and Clara (Merrill) Green.[13]
