Artemas Hammond⁷ Whitney (John Smith⁶, Thomas⁵, Thomas⁴, Eleazer³, Thomas², John¹), son of John Smith⁶ and Susanna (Knowlton) Whitney, was born 14 Jan 1797, Shrewsbury, MA,^[1] and died 12 Oct 1875, Ludlow, MA [Pierce], or 11 Oct 1875, Ludlow, MA, aged 77 years 8 months 27 days, of dropsy.^[2]

Marriage intentions were published 12 Dec 1819, Petersham, MA, for him and Nabby Skinner "of Dana".^[3] He "of Petersham" married firstly, 30 Dec 1819, Dana, MA, Nabby Skinner.^[4] She was born 12 Aug 1797, Palmer, MA, and died 22 Apr 1859 [Pierce] or "Abby" 20 Apr 1859, Ludlow, MA, aged 62 years, of dropsy.^[5]

He married secondly, 27 Dec 1860, Caroline M. Alden, daughter of Benjamin and Polly (Hodges) Alden. She was born 26 Jun 1815, Greenwich, MA, and died 8 Sep 1885, Belchertown, MA, aged 70 years, of typhoid fever.^[6]

He was a farmer. He resided Dana and Ludlow, MA.
