Hiram Whitney (Eli, James), son of Eli and Catherine (Longyear) Whitney, was born 6 May 1828, Shandaken, NY, and died 7 Oct 1907, Shandaken, NY.

Hiram began working with his father on the farm until he reached his majority, when he struck out for himself in the lumber business for ten years. After his marriage he began the business of producing tan bark until 1868. In 1857, he bought 2000 acres of land and built a sawmill. In 1864, he opened a general store in Shandaken, in 1869 erected a large chair factory employing 125 men. In 1884 built the mammoth store at Shandaken, the largest one in Ulster county. In 1886, he purchased the Palace Hotel.[1]
He was a very sccessful chair manufacturer in Shandaken, employing 1,000 people in 1880. He owned 6,000 acres of land, from which was obtained the raw material used in his factory. Was a Methodist.

Notes
This family cannot be descended from the inventor Eli Whitney, whose agnate descendants are known. Furthermore, the inventor was too young to be Hiram's great-grandfather. They could be cousins, but until the ancestry of the Ulster Co., NY, family is proven, this is merely speculative.
