John8 Whitney (John7, Silas6, Daniel5, Richard4, Richard3, Richard2, John1), son of John7 and Susannah (Viles) Whitney, was born 16 Oct 1807, Boston, MA, and died 24 May 1861, Brighton, MA, aged 53 years 7 months 8 days, of apoplexy[1] [but found in the 1870 census!].

He married, 22 or 23 Dec 1828, Boston, MA,[2] Mary Baldwin Holt, daughter of Benjamin and Ruth (Baldwin) Holt. She was born 13 Oct 1806, Boston, MA, and died 7 Jul 1877, Lancaster, MA, aged 70 years 8 months, of old age[3] [but not found in 1870 census].

He was born in Boston; educated at the public schools and at Harvard college. He was in the wholesale grocery business until 1857. From that time until his death he was in the employ of the old Boston & Worcester railroad as commercial agent. He resided Brighton and South Lancaster, MA.

Children of John8 and Mary Baldwin (Holt) Whitney:

i. John9 Whitney, b. 9 Apr 1831, Cambridge, MA;[4] d. s. p. 15 May 1891, Vicksburg, MS. He served in the regular army from 1861 to 1883, and was retired as brevet lieutenant-colonel.
ii. Mary Baldwin Whitney, b. 14 Nov 1833, Cambridge, MA; m.(1) George Lee Thurston; m.(2) Henry Stedman Nourse.
iii. Benjamin Holt Whitney, b. 13 Nov 1843, Wayland, MA;[5] m. Kate L. Goodman.
iv. Susan Ruth Whitney, b. 31 Mar 1845, Wayland, MA;[6] d. 13 Aug 1845, aged 4 months, of cholera morbus.[7]
v. Edward Mellen Whitney, b. 17 Jul 1849; d. 13 Aug 1849.

Possibly the 1870 census has John Whitney listed when his widow Mary (i.e., Mrs. John Whitney) was meant.
