Joseph7 Whitney (Jonas6, Jonas5, David4, Benjamin3, John2, John1), son of Jonas6 and Betsey (Raymond) Whitney, was born 18 Dec 1794, Westminster, MA,[1] and died 6 Apr 1873, Leominster, MA, aged 78 years 3 months 19 days, of old age.[2]
Marriage intentions were published 20 Nov 1823, Westminster, MA, for him "Lieut." and Sally Herrington.[3] He "Lieut." married, 20 Nov 1823, Westminster, MA, Sally Harrington,[4] daughter of Benjamin and Sarah (Woodward) Harrington. She was born 15 Sep 1804, Westminster, MA, and died 28 or 26 Jan 1859,[5] Leominster, MA, aged 54 years 4 months, of lung fever.[6]
Joseph Whitney, son of Jonas and Betsey (Raymond) Whitney, married Sally daughter of Benjamin and Sarah (Woodward) Harrington. He was a carpenter by trade, and for many years a leading contractor and builder in West, and neighboring towns. Several meetinghouses in that general vicinity were erected under his supervision, his thorough acquaintance with his business, and his well-earned reputation for integrity and honor creating demand for his services wherever he was known. He was a strong temperance man, having the courage of his convictions, and was a member of the first board of selectmen elected on that issue, in 1843. As the infirmities of age came upon him, he disposed of his property in Westminster and removed to Leominster, where his children were living, spending his last days in the immediate neighborhood of his entire family. He resided in Westminster and Leominster, MA.
Heywood says the following:[7]
- "Whitney, Joseph7, s. of Jonas and Betsey (Raymond) Whitney, m. Sally (14), dau. of Benjamin and Sarah (Woodward) Harrington, Nov. 20, 1823. He was a carpenter by trade, and for many years a leading contractor and builder in W. and neighboring towns. Several meetinghouses in this general vicinity were erected under his supervision, his thorough acquaintance with his business, and his well-earned reputation for integrity and honor creating a demand for his services wherever he was known. He was a strong temperance man, having the courage of his convictions, and was a member of the first Board of Selectmen elected on that issue, in 1843.
