Moranda Hanford7 Whitney (Samuel Starfield6, Thomas5, James4, Henry3, John2, Henry1), son of Samuel Starfield6 and Lois (Stewart) Whitney, was born 2 Jun 1830, New Canaan, CT, and died 1909. He was buried in Lakeview Cemetery, New Canaan, CT.[1]
He married, 20 Mar 1852, Poundridge, NY, Jane Elizabeth Bell, daughter of Harmon and Mary Amelia (Scofield) Bell. She was born 13 Jun 1834, New Canaan, CT, and died 15 Feb 1870, in Ponus Street, New Canaan, CT [but she appears in the 1870 census, and the year 1871 appears on her tombstone. Probably the correct date is 15 Feb 1871.--RLW]. She was buried in Lakeveiw Cemetery, New Canaan, CT.[2]
Phoenix says the following:
- ". . . a plasterer . . . . They settled at New Canaan, . . . . He was living there in Feb. 1876. He enlisted for three years, at Darien, Conn., 9 Aug. 1862, in Co. B, 17th Reg., Conn. Vol. Infantry; took part in the battles of Chancellorsville, Gettysburgh, and Braddock's Farms, in the last of which he was taken prisoner. He was sent to the well-known prison at Andersonville, where he endured his share of the suffering that befell its unfortunate inmates."
Wounded 2 Jul 1863, Gettysburg, PA. Captured 5 Feb 1865, Dunn's Lake, FL. Released 21 Apr 1865. Discharged 14 Jun 1865.
