Family:Whitney, Moses (1747-1824)

Moses⁶ Whitney (Ephraim⁵, Moses⁴, Moses³, Richard², John¹), son of Ephraim⁵ and Jane (Bancroft) Whitney, was born 11 Jan 1747, Lunenburg, MA,^[1] and died 1824, Raymond, ME.

Marriage intentions were published 16 Aug 1766, Petersham, MA, for him and Sarah Gearay "of Luninburgh".^[2] He "of Petersham" m. 20 Nov 1766, Lunenburg, MA, Sarah Geary "of Luninburgh". Possibly she may have been that Sarah, daughter of Joseph and Ruth (Goodale) Garey, born 31 Jul 1747, Worcester, MA.

He lived in 1776 at Raymond, ME. "Moses Whitney was the first of the name in Rindge, and for some time prior to the Revolutionary war was a merchant. He moved from New Salem in Jan. 1772. His wife's name was Sarah -----, and his children were Moses, Ephraim, and Salmon."^[3]

He sold land in New Salem, MA, in 1771.^[4]

"MOSES WHITNEY said to be Revolutionary soldier, came to Mr. Geo. Peirces Oct. ye 15, 1777 and moved his family into his own house Dec. ye 6, 1777 (B. Patch Diary) Capt. Britton does not mention him [in] the list of first 14 families, and it is believed he settled at first not very far from Mr. Peirce's place in O. and his and his descendants still live on the old homestead in that town. In a few years he moved to Raymond. He had a daughter who married Hezekiah C who died in 1859 (the daughter) (Samuel Knight Diary) (But probably Hezekiah Cook's wife was the dau. of a later Moses Whitney). Moses Whitney was a merchant in Boston and Mr. Geo. Peirce worked for him trucking goods but the merchant met with absolute financial disaster and followed his successful truckman into the woods, in Maine to mend his fortunes. Mr. Whitney lived to a great age and died in the town of Phillips. His wife lived to be over 100 and died in Raymond."^[5]

vi.	Peletiah Whitney, b. say 1778; m. Hannah Blethen.
vii.	Mary Whitney, b. say 1780, m. ----- Mann "of Casco".
viii.	Jane Whitney, b. 1782; m. 2 Mar 1800, Otisfield, ME, Daniel Cook, Jr. "both of Raymondtown";[6] resided Casco, ME.
ix.	Salmon Whitney, b. ca. 1785, New Salem, MA; m. Abigail Bray.
x.	(poss.) Sally Whitney, b. ca. 1776, ME; d. 1859; m. 14 Nov 1793, Bridgton, ME, Hezekiah Cook.[7] They are in Raymond and Casco, ME, in the censuses.

• 1810: not found.
