Family:Whitney, Robert (1794-a1874)
Robert7 Whitney (Abel6, Aaron5, Moses4, Moses3, Richard2, John1), son of Abel6 and Clarissa (Dwight) Whitney, was born 18 Aug 1794, Westfield, MA,[1] was baptized 25 Aug 1794, Westfield, MA,[2] and died after 1874 and before 1880, Peterborough, NH.
He married, 24 Aug 1820[3] or 11 Sep 1820, Springfield, MA,[4] or 11 Sep 1820, Westfield, MA, Margaret Ashley Dwight.[5] She was born 2 Sep 1795, and died 16 May 1891.
He was a merchant in Westfield, MA, for some years. In 1834 he moved to Ohio, and was cashier of a bank in Sandusky. In 1838 he returned east and passed most of his time in Springfield, MA. He died in Peterborough. Resided Peterborough, NH.

i. James Dwight8 Whitney, b. 19 Aug 1821, Westfield, MA; bapt. 28 Oct 1821, Westfield, MA;[6] m. Sophia A. Steele. ii. Jonathan Dwight Whitney, b. 24 Jan 1823, Westfield, MA; bapt. 22 May 1823, Westfield, MA;[7] d. 16 May 1873, unmarried. Was a merchant in Sandusky, OH. During the late war he was in the commissary department of the 4th Iowa Regiment. For some years he was a farmer in Afton, IA, but later was engaged in grape growing in Missouri. He died in Saint Louis. iii. Robert Sanford Whitney, b. 9 Jun 1825, Westfield, MA; bapt. 7 Aug 1825, Westfield, MA;[8] d. 25 Apr 1864, unmarried. He was cashier of a Savings Bank at St. Louis, and member of the First Congregational church. In the records of the latter is the following: "The name of Robert S. Whitney will long be dear to all among us who loved modest, unassuming, genuine Christian worth, and gentle but firm Christian principle. His character was one pervaded, lighted up and established by a godly sincerity; one of delicate and shrinking diffidence, but of thorough, genuine, manly truth. His fidelity was like the sun; his honor and integrity among business men would have secured him any trust. His aim was to be useful in any sphere. He was singularly free from ambition of precedence or display." iv. Henry Gassett Whitney, b. 3 Jul 1827, Westfield, MA; bapt. 7 Oct 1827, Westfield, MA;[9] resided unmarried in Saint Louis, MO, where he has been variously employed in banks, government and railroad business. v. Francis Whitney, b. 22 Nov 1829, Westfield, MA; bapt. 4 Jul 1830, Westfield, MA;[10] resided Saint Louis, MO, unmarried. vi. Margaret Dwight Whitney, b. 9 Aug 1832; resided unmarried in Springfield, MA. vii. George Whitney, b. 12 Oct 1834; d. 9 Mar 1837. viii. William Whitney, b. 12 Mar 1838, Sandusky City, OH, was a private in the late war in Company G, 37th Massachusetts Regiment, and "disappeared" in one of the battles of the wilderness, 6 May 1864. General Edwards, his commanding officer said of him, "he performed his duties faithfully, and was about to be promoted at the time of his death."
