He married first, before 1870, Celia Whittemore, daughter of Cyrus and Mary Davis (Richardson) Whittemore, his first cousin. She was born Nov 1844, NY, and died after 1900. They were separated before 1880, when his wife (not widow!) and son Arthur are found.

He married, 3 Jun 1884, Monticello, IA, Eliza Chandler, daughter of William and Hannah (-----) Chandler. She was born 13 Oct 1853, Rindge, NH, and died 29 Oct 1931, Sylvania, OH.

After the death of his brother William H. Whitney he apparently changed his name from George S. Whitney to William A. Whitney.

He resided Sylvania, OH.
