Charles H.8 Whitney (David7, Isaac6, Abner5, Jonas4, Eleazer3, Thomas2, John1), son of David7 and Chloe H. (Farrington) Whitney, was born about May 1841, Brookline, MA, and died 31 Jan 1871, Brookline, MA, aged 29 years 8 months, of a bullet wound causing pulmonary consumption.[1]
He did not marry, but had a liaison with, Mary Ann Banks, daughter of William L. and Matilda (-----) Banks, of Hanover Co., VA.
He is listed in "Compiled Military Service Records of Volunteer Union Soldiers Who Served with the United States Colored Troops: Infantry Organizations, 36th through 40th (NARA Publications #M1933): Charles H. Whitney, age 22.
He is listed in "Individual Muster-In Roll of Co. --, 3rd Regiment North Carolina Colored Infantry." Aged 22 years, at Fortress Monroe, VA, 2 Jan 1864. "Joined for duty and enrolled Dec. 24, 1863, Norfolk, VA, 3 years." On the Company Muster-Out Roll, dated 11 Feb 1867, Raleigh, NC, in remarks: "Enlisted as Pvt, 1st M. V. at Boston Mass. May 23/61. [NOTE: The 3rd Regiment of N.C.C.T. was another name for the 37th Regiment of U.S.C.T.[2]]
He enlisted 24 Dec 1863 as Captain, Co. D, 37th Infantry U.S. Colored Troops, in the Civil War. Promoted to Brevet Major on 13 Mar 1865. Mustered out on 11 Feb 1867.[3] He was stationed in Fort Caswell, NC, in 1865.
He did not apply for a pension based on this service.

Charles H. Whitney applied 31 Mar 1870 for a pension as an invalid on service in Co. A., 1st Massachusetts Infantry, application #154,485, certificate #105,250.
He recruited William L. Banks, Mary Ann's father, into his company.

He was not the same person as Charles Howard8 Whitney.
In 1998 his great-grandson gave his middle name as Henry.[5]
