John Fay Whitney (John), son of John and Lydia (Russell) Whitney, was born 4 Jan 1810, Union, ME, and died between 4 Mar 1894 and 5 Jul 1894, Providence, RI.

He married, 27 Sep 1835, Belmont, ME, Jane B. Kiff. She was born about 1811, ME, and died 23 Feb 1879, Centerville, RI.

He married secondly, 11 Oct 1879, Warwick, RI, Catherine E. Mason. She was born about 1836, NH, and died after 1880.

i. Emily Jane Whitney, b. 14 Aug 1836, Searsmont, ME; m. 16 Oct 1861, Morrill or Belfast, ME, Ephraim Redman[1] "of Brooklin", ME;[2] resided Portland, ME.
ii. John Willard Whitney, 22 Dec 1837, Searsmont, ME; d. 22 Jun 1868 aged 30 years 1 month, Rockland, ME. A photo of his gravestone is on line here. He is buried in Warren, ME.
iii. Addison Otis Whitney, b. 30 Oct 1839, Searsmont, ME; d. 19 Apr 1861, Baltimore, MD. Addison O. Whitney enlisted in the Lowell, MA, City Guard in 1860, and was discharged in early 1861. In April, 1861, members of that unit were asked to re-enlist in the US Army. On 15 Apr 1861, Addison O. Whitney enlisted in Co. D of the 6th Maine Infantry. The company embarked by train for Washington, DC, where they were to be mustered into the army. However, the train was attacked by a mob of southern sympathizers in Baltimore, and Addison Whitney was killed on 19 Apr 1861, along with Luther Crawford Ladd, the first two casualties of the Civil War. The Ladd and Whitney monument to them was built in Lowell, MA. See an article about it.
iv. Mary Celestia Whitney, b. 5 May 1842, ME; m. 13 Aug 1864, Rockport, ME, George A. Simmons.
