Heywood divided his book into two parts: Part One: Descriptive Review of Public Affairs (p. 1-507), which has an index; and Part Two: Biographic-Genealogical Record (p. 509-953). In Part Two, Heywood attempted to trace the ancestral lines of all families residing in Westminster, Mass., between 1728 and 1893 - a surname index is given below. An italicized entry indicates a main family heading within the book, the majority of which contain Heywood's summarized ancestral line of that surname. An unitalicized surname indicates a family (or group) who settled in Westminster briefly or for whom he had no more information. Any "unlinked" surnames were not transcribed.

Following Heywood's lead, Tolman's book is divided into 2 parts: Part I: Narrative, being the Historical section, which contains an index; Part II: The Genealogies. Like Heywood, there is no surname index, "since they are in alphabetical order."

The extracts from Heywood's History of Westminster and Tolman's A History of Westminster have been transcribed as verbatim as possible, including any misspellings. To aid in searching the pages, surnames have been highlighted in bold and additional numbered links added by the transcriber. Every effort was made to include all Whitney descendants from each volume, since the latter refers to persons in the former.
These books were borrowed through the New England Historic Genealogical Society's lending library for a two week period and extractions were made from scanned pages.
