William Lambert9 Whitney, Jr. (William Lambert8, Abel7, Peter6, Aaron5, Moses4, Moses3, Richard2, John1), son of William Lambert8 and Rebecca Richardson (Bracken) Whitney, was born 1 Feb 1844, Cambridge, MA,[1] and died 29 Oct 1922, Newton, MA.

He married, 12 Nov 1872, Montpelier, VT, Alpha Matilda Nutt,[2] daughter of Henry and Asenath (Wheeler) Nutt. She was born 27 Jul 1848, Montpelier, VT, and died 28 May 1935, Newton, MA.

He was nearly fitted for college when in Aug 1862, he left school and enlisted for nine months in Company E, 44th Massachusetts Infantry; served the term out in North Carolina, returning home in Jun 1863. His parents refusing to allow him to re-enlist, he engaged with a wholesale dry goods house in Boston until they gave their consent to his accepting a commission as 2d lieutenant in the 34th Massachusetts Infantry, a colored regiment, commanded by Colonel Robert G. Shaw. Commission was dated 3 Dec 1864. He went to South Carolina, joined the regiment and served with them until the regiment was discharged, 20 Aug 1865, at Charleston; was acting adjutant for several months and afterwards promoted to 1st lieutenant. He went into the hardware business in Boston in 1865, soon after coming home; at the end of two years sold out, and in Feb 1868, went into the china and glassware business in Council Bluffs, IA, where he remained till Aug 1881, when he sold out and went to Newton, where he is now living; resided Newton, MA, 74 Waban Park.
